Early Life and Education
Eleftherios Venizelos was born in Mournies, Crete, on August 23, 1864. His father, Kyriakos Venizelos, was a wealthy merchant and landowner, and his mother, Styliani Ploumidaki, was a devout Christian. Venizelos received his early education at the local Greek school in Mournies. In 1872, he moved to Chania, the capital of Crete, to attend the prestigious Gymnasion.
