Anna is a young woman from a wealthy family who has lost everything in the stock market crash. Desperate for work, she takes a job as a maid for the wealthy Van der Luyden family. Sarah is a young woman from a poor family who is struggling to make ends meet. She takes a job as a waitress at the Van der Luydens' parties.
Anna and Sarah come from different worlds, but they share a common bond: they are both strong and determined women who are trying to survive in a difficult time. As they work together, they develop a friendship that will change their lives forever.
One day, Anna overhears a conversation between Mr. Van der Luyden and his business associates. She learns that they are planning to foreclose on the homes of their tenants, including Sarah's family. Anna is horrified, and she knows that she has to do something to help her friend.
Anna goes to Sarah and tells her what she has heard. Sarah is devastated, but Anna convinces her that they can fight back. Together, they organize the other tenants and stage a rent strike. The strike is successful, and the Van der Luydens are forced to back down.
Anna and Sarah's victory is a small one, but it is a victory nonetheless. It shows that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. The Promise is a powerful and moving novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
