Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are successful in negotiating a treaty with the Trade Federation, but they are attacked by Darth Maul, a Sith Lord. Qui-Gon is killed in the battle, but Obi-Wan escapes with the help of a young boy named Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin's actions are reported to the Jedi Council, and he is brought before a tribunal. The Council decides to expel Anakin from the Jedi Order, but Obi-Wan convinces them to give him a second chance.

Meanwhile, the Separatist movement is growing in strength. Led by Count Dooku, a former Jedi Master, the Separatists are amassing an army of droids.

The Jedi Council sends Anakin and Obi-Wan to investigate the Separatists. They travel to Geonosis, where they discover that the Separatists are building a droid army. The Jedi are captured by the Separatists and are sentenced to death.
