Simon Stephens is one of the most acclaimed playwrights of his generation. His work has been performed all over the world, and he has won numerous awards, including the Olivier Award for Best New Play. In this article, Stephens shares his working diary, offering a unique insight into the creative process of a theatre maker.
Monday, 9am
I start the day by reading the newspaper and catching up on emails. I then spend an hour or two working on a new play. I'm still in the early stages of development, so I'm just exploring ideas and characters at this point.
Tuesday, 10am
I have a meeting with my director to discuss a new production of one of my plays. We talk about the casting, the design, and the overall vision for the production. I'm really excited about this project, and I think it's going to be a great success.
Wednesday, 12pm
I give a talk to a group of students about my work. I talk about my creative process, my influences, and my hopes for the future of theater. I enjoy talking to students, and I always hope that I can inspire them to pursue their own creative dreams.
Thursday, 2pm
I spend the afternoon working on a new short story. I'm not sure where it's going yet, but I'm enjoying the process of exploring the characters and the world of the story.
Friday, 4pm
I finish the week by attending a rehearsal of a new play by a young playwright. I'm always interested in seeing the work of new writers, and I'm impressed by the talent of this young playwright.
Saturday, 10am
I spend the morning writing in my journal. I find that journaling helps me to process my thoughts and feelings, and it's a great way to generate new ideas for my work.
Sunday, 2pm
I take a break from work and go for a walk in the park. I find that spending time in nature helps me to relax and recharge my creativity.
This is just a snapshot of a week in the life of a theatre maker. My work is often challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding. I love the process of creating something new, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my work with the world.
