Heather Wightman became the first British woman to win the European 1500m title for 39 years when she stormed to victory in Munich. The 29-year-old from Fife led from gun to tape, setting a new Scottish record of 4:00.53 in the process.

The race in Munich was a tactical affair, with Wightman content to sit behind the leading pack for much of the first lap. However, she made her move with around 600m to go, and once she hit the front, she never looked back.
