Early Life and Career

Birgit Nilsson was born on May 17, 1918, in Västra Karup, Sweden. She began singing as a child and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm. After graduating, she made her professional debut in 1946 as Lady Macbeth in Verdi's Macbeth. Nilsson quickly gained a reputation for her powerful voice and dramatic intensity, and she soon became one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world.

Wagnerian Roles

Nilsson's most famous roles were those of Wagnerian heroines. She first sang Brünnhilde in 1954 at the Bayreuth Festival, and she quickly became the definitive interpreter of the role. Nilsson's voice was perfectly suited to the demands of Wagner's music, and she could easily sing over the orchestra without losing her vocal power. She also possessed a great dramatic presence, and her performances as Brünnhilde were both thrilling and moving.

Nilsson also sang the roles of Isolde and Elektra with great success. Her Isolde was particularly noted for its passion and intensity, and her Elektra was characterized by its vocal power and dramatic fire. Nilsson's performances in these roles helped to establish her as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of all time.

Other Roles

In addition to her Wagnerian roles, Nilsson also sang a wide range of other operas, including Verdi's Aida, Puccini's Tosca, and Strauss's Salome. She was particularly known for her performances as Turandot in Puccini's opera of the same name. Nilsson's Turandot was both powerful and nuanced, and she brought a great deal of depth to the role.

Later Career

Nilsson continued to sing into her late sixties, and she retired from the stage in 1984. After her retirement, she remained active as a teacher and mentor to young singers. Nilsson died on December 25, 2005, at the age of 87.
