Reid attended Louisville Central High School, where she was a star basketball player and a member of the National Honor Society. She went on to attend the University of Kentucky, where she earned a degree in journalism in 1972.

After graduating from college, Reid worked as a reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal. In 1975, she moved to Germany to work for the German newspaper Die Welt. She was the first African American journalist to work for a German newspaper.
